What makes having a child fun??

Having a child in the 21st century has meant new gadgets and information and more things to make being pregnant fun. Here are some things that made pregnancy fun for me.

2. TOYS!!! No, not baby toys, but the gadgets that they have disguised as stollers, high chairs and more. They have become more high tech than they used to be. 3. Baby toys. Yes, now I am talking about baby toys. I have been watching television and particularly enjoy the makeovers for the children's rooms. Here are some websites that provide quality furniture and great ideas at a wonderful price.

Raising Confident Children

How do we raise confident children. How do we keep them grounded, yet self-assured in a world that is increasingly interested in the promotion of self-interest and selfishness with success received at any cost and by any means necessary?

1. Tell your children that they are special. Let them know that they count in your life and are an important part of it. Self - assured children are usually allowed to take risks (intelligent risks please!) and step out on a limb to try something new.

2. Allow them to work alongside you. Let them crack the eggs for you while you mix the ingredients of the cake. Let them turn the wrench a few times to loosen a bolt on a bike or gadget you are taking apart or putting together. Give them a paintbrush and allow them to paint part of that living room wall. I can assure you, the pride that comes in being involved in something with tangible results is a great confidence booster (works for adults too). They also get to show everyone who comes into the house the results of their handymanship.

3. Teach your sons how to cook and bake, and your daughters how to build and fix. A multifaceted individual is always going to be more confident than one who is not sure of some things. They can then hold their own in any conversation and be the go-to person for ideas or solutions. Plus, they get to be self-assured and independent. Nothing like being able to do it for yourself to build your esteem.

4. Allow them to fail. This is an important part of building confidence. Failure is not always a bad thing. Mistakes teach us what works and what doesn't and prepares us to make less mistakes later. Life is full of things that go wrong, but a child that learns how to deal with failure will confidently move forward for they have learnt that failure is just a stepping stone to success.

With summer officially here, I thought I would list some unusual
vacation ideas for the more adventurous at heart.

1. Vocation vacations. Learn more about a business that you might be interested in trying. You get to run the entire operation for a day or two, and get mentored by experts in the field. It's a great way to know if the business you want to start is really for you.

2. Whale watching. The Oceanic Society sponsors whale watching, natural history, and research expeditions. Great fun for those interested in protection marine wildlife.

3. Earthwatch Institute. Save natural resources, preserve wildlife or monitor global warming. This is great for those of you who want to pass on global responsibility to your children. Many trips are off the beaten path, so you get to see really unique parts of the world.

4. Amizade offers an opportunity to build a
school, plant a garden or just build something that will help a community in the tourist area you are visiting.

5. Global Citizens enables you to
build a health clinic, run a recycling plant, or improve a park. Learn how other cultures function and make new friends.

As we draw to the end of the holiday season, let us determine to create
traditions that will stay with our families long after we are gone. Traditions are the framework of our very existence, drawing us closer together and helping us create a sense of belonging and of who we are.

1. Christmas/Kwanzaa/Chanukkah Traditions. Here are some traditions from the UK and Kwanzaa, an African-American celebration that is symbolic of several values. As we listen to the news and hear about all the things that are being
added to our foods, the status of our health care system, and the overall overweight problem in America, it is easy to get discouraged. Here are a few ways that we can protect ourselves and stay healthy.

1. Health Grades grades hospitals, doctors and nursing homes so that you are aware of the level of care that they offer. You can also find out what their statistics are in terms of mistakes and services offered.

2. Kids Health is a great site to have your child play as they learn about their bodies, ways to stay healthy, and, maybe, even come up with a fantastic science project for school. (Oh, parents, the site is fun for us too..yes, I dabbled!)

3. Keep Kids Healthy is a site by pediatricians for parents who want to know how to keep their children healthy, both physically and mentally. It also lets you know which medications are/are not safe for your children.

4. Hospital Web USA will help you locate a hospital in any State in the U.S. They also have some information on hospitals abroad. Great for you family travellers out there.

5. If you are breastfeeding when you travel, then this will be a great page for you to read. Learn how to store breast milk safely while in the air.

6.The Travel Doctor is a site that
offers information on travel innoculations and the latest travel alerts for countries around the world. Great for the international traveller.

We are now in the season of science projects at school. Parents, it's
time to start catching up on the reasons why things work they way they
do (talk about learning all over again!). Here are some pages that
have great information and ideas. Lots of fun and creativity - the
kids won't know they are learning. This is also handy for parents who
have that toddler who is always asking 'why??'.

1. Science Buddies. You
can search for information on different topics for science projects
(this is done by grade level), or research topics that are already
there. The ideas are graded for difficulty, and tips are provided for
those who are interested in having a phenomenal science project.

2. All Science Fair Projects . These projects come with
complete ideas on how to complete them. They are set up by grade.

3. The Science Club. This site answers
science questions, provides science project ideas, and links you to
other science project websites.

4. Science Toys. Learn how to make toys at
home from common household materials. From candle powered steam boats
to crystal radio kits, thes are fun for the older child.

5. Fun Science Gallery.

Even if you don't get to do the science experiments, you will learn

this in mind, let us look at some of the young people that have
succeeded, and the information that is available to support your

start-up ideas for budding entrepreneurs ages 8-18. Great source of
information with a newsletter, magazine and more. They show how to
collect bills owed to you, how, and where, to invest your money
wisely, and

2. Young Entrepreneur. This site
provides links to information, a free business listing for the young
business person, and business tools. Registration is free and required
to access some parts of the website.

3. Kid entrepreneurs .
This page lets you know about ways to help your child become more
involved in business and learn how to run one by doing little chores
for you.

4. How to raise an entrepreneur

This page will show what it takes to raise a child who thinks like an
entrepreneur.

Making a living on a small income

How do we go about stretching those dollars to make ends meet and still put money aside for a rainy day? Here are some articles that I discovered that address this. This is especially relevant for single parents who might be working the minimum wage jobs. Don't give up! Folks before have done it and lived to tell.
1. There is a wonderful group called the Women'>http://spaces.msn.com/MSNMoneyWomenInRed/">Women in Red that share their money saving options. Learn what tricks they use to stretch a dollar.
2. For those that are living on $31,000 or less a year, there is a wonderful inspiring story of a lady who has done just that, and lived to tell. Tricia has managed to parlay her $533 a week into savings to support 3 kids, 2 mortgages and 1 car payment, and still manages to get money into her savings account. Read her story here.
3. Breast feed your child. Yes, you heard me right. Breastfeeding is not only better for your child, but is very cost effective. The average cost of formula is a lot more than $3 or $4 per can and children go through it much faster than breast milk. Breast milk has tons of added benefits - builds the childs immunity system, has been found to develop children with a higher IQ, and provides a great way for mother and child to bond. Mothers, you also burn tons of calories when you breastfeed, your uterus returns to its original position faster, and you get much needed sleep. Can't beat it.
4. If you aren't squeamish and have a back yard, grow a little garden. One lady fed a family of four AND a neighbor from a 10-by-15-foot garden. Very healthy for you (more exercise) and all organic!! Glowing skin and healthy insides are a sure way to reduce your doctor's bill too.
5. Fly cheap. Here are two search engines that provide great fares. Mobissmo, and Itasoftware.com.
6. Buy non-perishable foods in bulk, split the price on two-for-one deals with a friend, put a dollar in a jar everytime you do the laundry, and cash in your spare change (not at the money machine because they charge you, but at the bank that will sort for free).
