You have a dental appointment that you are looking forward to and you count down the days to the procedure. Why is that? Well, the dentist that you are going to see has laid out his office so that it is more like going to the spa, then going to a dentist. There are fruits and beverages to eat, free foot massagers in the waiting room, the subtle, pleasant scent of lavender, and a the soothing sounds of spa music wafting down the halls. Aaaah, pure bliss. During the actual procedure, you find that you are enjoying the music coming through the headphones they have given you. In some offices, they have video mask goggles that you can put on to watch your favorite show.

The trend toward dental spas is a growing one. Many dentists that have taken this approach have enjoyed the increase in patients and growth of revenue that it provides. Patients are so calm that it is easy to work on them safely, and they often opt for additional services that are not covered by their insurance. Spa Finder lists three and this article talks about Dental Spas in Maryland. A simple Google search will unearth these ortho-treasures so be sure to find one in your area and try it. You can't beat the feeling, and may just end up changing your dentist permanently.

Who is responsible for a Child's teeth

A child died from a brain infection that originated in his abcessed tooth. Make your baby wipes at home (instructions can be found at http://www.thefrugalshopper.com/articles/babywipes.shtml).

2. Is baby constipated? Use mashed papaya or pumpkins to make them regular. Much cheaper and healthier than an enema. (Check with the doctor first to make sure that YOUR baby will be okay with these foods).

4. Teething gel, natural baby oil and more recipes can be found here: http://www.theherbsplace.com/essentialchildren.html

FOR MOM

1. That is hardly the case. Most mothers decide to stay home with their children because that's their priority. Here are some groups that provide support to stay-at-home mothers.

1. Mocha Moms (www.mochamoms.org) This is an organization that provides support for stay-at-home mothers of color.

2. 4 Moms at Home (www.4momsathome.com) offers links to various parenting sites, a recipe exchange page and printable lists (chores, grocery, etc.).

3. Bizymoms.com (www.bizymoms.com) This site has great (and realistic) ideas for stay-at-home mothers looking for legitimate ways to bring in a steady income. Lots of great ideas, advice and more from other stay-at-home mothers who have done it successfully.

4. Salary.com (www.salary.com/careers/layouthtmls/crel_display_Cat10_Ser253_Par358.html) did an analysis of what a stay-at-home mother is worth. It is a GREAT tribute to mothers and their worth.

5. Moms Expo (www.momsexpo.com) is another website that introduces stay-at-home mothers to work-at-home opportunities. They also provide recipies, advice and information on parenting.

Mothers (and Fathers) we salute all of you who have chosen the important job of raising the family with dignity and love. For one last Hurrah, lets look at some unique, memorable and family-friendly vacations.

Try a treehouse or lighthouse, or a cave to add interest to your vacation. There are several that you can go to (listed here http://www.adventurelandtravel.com/UnusualLodging.html).

Try renting a farmhouse and living in authentic farm style (well, not quite, but the food is fresh, as is the air). Lost Mountain Lodge http://www.lostmountainlodge.com/farmhouse.html is located near a beach, this farm house if full of luxuries that will make mom want to stay for ever, while allowing the children to walk to the beach or play in the yard.

Going to Europe? Try a barge tour (http://www.bargeexperts.com/). It is a wonderful way to see Europe AND experience riding on a barge.

Try a vacation by rail (http://www.vacationsbyrail.com/). What a great way to see the States and expose your children to the fun of riding on a train.

The kids may hate you if you tell them that this is actually a learning vacation, but take them, anyway. They will have tons of fun while they learn (http://www.learningvacations.com/).

The idea is to bond and just enjoy each other. Have fun learning......uh...vacationing!!

Fun Spots for the Family

1. Here are some things that made pregnancy fun for me.

1. Learning the meaning of baby names. http://www.thenewparentsguide.com/baby-names-main.htm I enjoyed seeing what was out there.

2. TOYS!!! No, not baby toys, but the gadgets that they have disguised as stollers, high chairs and more. They have become more high tech than they used to be. My husband and I got kicked out of more baby stores than I can count for playing with the displays http://www.thenewparentsguide.com/baby-gear-shopping.htm

3. Baby toys. Yes, now I am talking about baby toys. I really enjoyed playing with all of them and finding out that the old toys I had played with as a child still existed (and were still as much fun as they used to be). http://www.mastermindtoys.com/, http://www.toystogrowon.com/ and http://www.toysrus.com.

4. I got spoiled. I got pampered and I learnt a lot about my body and what the baby looked like. http://www.baby-parenting.com/pregnancy/picture_pregnancy_stage.html.

What were your favorite things about being pregnant??

Furniture and Room Accessories for Kids

I have been watching television and particularly enjoy the makeovers for the children's rooms. How do we keep them grounded, yet self-assured in a world that is increasingly interested in the promotion of self-interest and selfishness with success received at any cost and by any means necessary?

1. Tell your children that they are special. Let them know that they count in your life and are an important part of it. Self - assured children are usually allowed to take risks (intelligent risks please!) and step out on a limb to try something new.

2. Allow them to work alongside you. Let them crack the eggs for you while you mix the ingredients of the cake. Let them turn the wrench a few times to loosen a bolt on a bike or gadget you are taking apart or putting together. Give them a paintbrush and allow them to paint part of that living room wall. I can assure you, the pride that comes in being involved in something with tangible results is a great confidence booster (works for adults too). They also get to show everyone who comes into the house the results of their handymanship.

3. Teach your sons how to cook and bake, and your daughters how to build and fix. A multifaceted individual is always going to be more confident than one who is not sure of some things. They can then hold their own in any conversation and be the go-to person for ideas or solutions. Plus, they get to be self-assured and independent. Nothing like being able to do it for yourself to build your esteem.

4. Allow them to fail. This is an important part of building confidence. Failure is not always a bad thing. Mistakes teach us what works and what doesn't and prepares us to make less mistakes later. Life is full of things that go wrong, but a child that learns how to deal with failure will confidently move forward for they have learnt that failure is just a stepping stone to success.
If you have any other ideas about how to raise confident children, please share them with us. We would love to hear from you.

Massage Therapy, Yoga and Fitness Classes While Pregnant

Okay pregnant ladies, it is time to stop ignoring your needs. Here are some things that can help make that pregnancy a lot easier for you. Remember to ALWAYS check with your physician BEFORE you embark on any exercise regimen.

1. Massage therapy. The benefits of massage are numerous. It helps reduce swelling, reduces stress on your weight-bearing joints, improves your breathing, relieves cramps and muscle spasms, and improves circulation. Many spas now offer hydrotherapy massage which allows you to lie on a pillow filled with water, while they massage you. It molds to your body, offering better comfort and provides for a more comfortable massage session. For links to spas around the country go to http://www.spaindex.com/Lifestyles/pregnancy.htm and find one in your state.

2. Yoga. Yoga offers 5 benefits for the pregnant woman. It increases the supply of oxygen to the fetus and mother, helps your reproductive organs, reduce nausea, increases the blood supply (and hence the nutrient supply) to the fetus, calms the mother, and provides for better sleep. For more about the benefits of yoga, visit Health and Yoga.

3. Exercise. Exercise has been shown to increase your energy level, reduce backaches, keep insomnia at bay, and strengthen your muscles for an easier childbirth. Swimming is beneficial as it is easy on the joints and makes you feel weightless. Learn more about the benefits of exercise during pregnancy here. Baby Fit also has some ideas on how to stay fit.

Drink lots of water and fresh juices, get lots of sleep, pamper yourself, and enjoy the pregnancy. This is a beautiful time in your life. You have been blessed with the honorable responsibility of carrying another life in you, and sustaining it. There are many who crave that gift. Enjoy it, glow like the queen you are, and love every second. It only lasts nine months.

Unique Vacations

With summer officially here, I thought I would list some unusual
vacation ideas for the more adventurous at heart.

1. Vocation vacations. Traditions are the framework of our very existence, drawing us closer together and helping us create a sense of belonging and of who we are.

Here are some sites that have information about family traditions around the world (both religious and non-religious). Feel free to share traditions that you have from your part of the world.

1. Christmas/Kwanzaa/Chanukkah Traditions. Here are some traditions from the UK and Kwanzaa, an African-American celebration that is symbolic of several values. This page looks at different ways of celebrating Christmas in various parts of the world. What do the symbols mean? Here is a page that explainsthem. Learn all about Chanukkah at this site.

2. Looking for wedding traditions? Rites of passage are extremely important in helping us lead our children into adulthood, or from one phase of life to another. The traditions can be used to help make difficult subjects easier to broach and have our children looking forward to becoming more responsible. This site has information about rites of passage from different ethnic groups. Hindu rituals and rites of passage are described on this site.

The BBC (British Broadcasting Company) highlighted some interesting rites of passage on its site.

No matter what we choose to do, we will be leaving a legacy for our children that will develop in them a strong sense of who they are, and what they stand for. Don't see anything that might be great to incorporate into your family tradition? Make up your own. There is no wrong tradition.

Fun and Educational sites for Children

The internet is a fun place to be and can be very educational for children. Here are some articles that I discovered that address this. This is especially relevant for single parents who might be working the minimum wage jobs. Don't give up! Folks before have done it and lived to tell.
1. There is a wonderful group called the <a href="<a href=">Women'>http://spaces.msn.com/MSNMoneyWomenInRed/">Women in Red that share their money saving options. Learn what tricks they use to stretch a dollar.
2. For those that are living on $31,000 or less a year, there is a wonderful inspiring story of a lady who has done just that, and lived to tell. Tricia has managed to parlay her $533 a week into savings to support 3 kids, 2 mortgages and 1 car payment, and still manages to get money into her savings account. Read her story here.
3. Breast feed your child. Yes, you heard me right. Breastfeeding is not only better for your child, but is very cost effective. The average cost of formula is a lot more than $3 or $4 per can and children go through it much faster than breast milk. Breast milk has tons of added benefits - builds the childs immunity system, has been found to develop children with a higher IQ, and provides a great way for mother and child to bond. Mothers, you also burn tons of calories when you breastfeed, your uterus returns to its original position faster, and you get much needed sleep. Can't beat it.
4. If you aren't squeamish and have a back yard, grow a little garden. One lady fed a family of four AND a neighbor from a 10-by-15-foot garden. Very healthy for you (more exercise) and all organic!! Glowing skin and healthy insides are a sure way to reduce your doctor's bill too.
5. Fly cheap. Here are two search engines that provide great fares. Mobissmo, and Itasoftware.com.
6. Buy non-perishable foods in bulk, split the price on two-for-one deals with a friend, put a dollar in a jar everytime you do the laundry, and cash in your spare change (not at the money machine because they charge you, but at the bank that will sort for free).
Good luck saving.
